Hitting Keys at Random

It had to happen sometime. After a year of quiz and 1,057 teams (!) logged, we finally had two teams show up with the same name. The Quizzards and You Are A Quizzard, Harry (previously The Quizzards) had an intense face-off, proving that an infinite number of teams answering an infinite number of questions will eventually all choose the same name.

We had an astounding 40 teams play last night - many of whom knew their Latin, lured the Danish National Symphony Orchestra away to a petrol station, and spoke to their dogs (or horses, depending on your source) in German. I still don’t know how to pronounce ‘blndsundoll4mj’, though.

Not-Swedish but Swedish-inspired (?) team Röhta Räkor ran away with the first place bottle this week, followed by the Quizzly Bears making another podium appearance in second. The Viqueens tried to give C U Next Tuesday take the third place prize, but duelists' honor bound both to an exciting sculpture-themed shootout for the bottled beers.

The Østerbros took the most average prize, performing slightly less well than Østerbros (Taylor's Version), which proves that life imitates art.

Good sports Killquizzarna graciously accepted that sticky icky last prize and proved that every Scandinavian country knows every other country’s joke drink.

The bar nearly ran out of glasses, proving that you were decidedly not joke drinking. Here’s the board for week 2:

1 . Röhta Räkor 61
2 . Quizzly Bears (best visual round!) 59

The Bar Serves Coffee, Too

Happy new year, everyone! We got polar vortex’d the whole time we were back in the United States for the holidays, so it was nice to return to a relatively tropical Danish winter. We enjoyed quizzing with you at Søhesten all the way through 2022 - and last night we had 21 teams get the 2023 quiz season off to a great start.

In the year’s first quiz, you disproved the existence of ghosts with a friendly reminder to check your furnace, decided it was Morbin time after all, and promptly forgot about Osiris. Since many of you are Cool Young People, you also dominated our list of EDM bangers that everyone will be listening to when they get around to going to the gym that one time in January.

Despite late joiners showing up and trying to snatch their crown, Hebo Witch took the last place prize by demonstrating their impeccable sportsmanship and enthusiasm for Scandinavian liquids. Kippis nailed the most average spot by showing off their ability to get nearly exactly 51.4 points, which is a neat party trick. At the top, Trump’s Accounting Team picked up third place despite asking us to give them 11,780 more points, Zolene rode to second place with their encyclopedic knowledge of hats, and the ViQueens took on a friendly solo player looking for a team with the knowledge they needed to jump to a first place berth.

The rest of you had your best games of the entire year. Here’s the board for Week 1:

1 . ViQueens 67
2 . Zolene (best visual round!) 66
3 . Trump's Accounting Team 62
4 . Iya, Y'alright 60
4 . Quiztina Aguilera 60
5 . Østerbros 59
6 . Busters Verden 58
6 . Scandoz 58
7 . Engineers 56
8 . Party Barn 54
9 . Kippis (most average!) 51
10 . Gigi Gugu 50
10 . Tres Amigos 50
10 . What's the Upside? 50
11 . Dutchies 49
12 . Send It (perfect music round!) 48
13 . Fluffy Returns 47
14 . Triangle of Awesome 45
15 . Hebo Witch (last place!) 39
16 . Oreblind (played late, still great) 32
17 . Quiztopher Walken (DNF, but that’s cool too) 21

A Country of Oskars

We love putting this quiz on for you every week – mostly because we’re rude and nosy and like hearing your stories about how you ended up answering questions about Renaissance painters/turtles at our favorite bar on Sølvgade.

I hung around a bit after quiz this week to talk with the winners, not-winners, and some of our long-time teams who are heading back to their home countries at the end of the year. Here’s my unsolicited commentary:

For the team with an American Midwesterner – there aren’t many of us here in Denmark, so we have to keep telling people what a corn dog is.

For the team that provided Icelandic pronunciation hints – I’m sorry the first thing I mentioned was the app.

For the team that asked me for romantic advice - someone gave you their number at quiz(!), a place where everyone specifically agrees not to be a jerk, so yeah, text them back.

For everyone else? I’m personally glad you know all the words to I Will Survive, I appreciated your enthusiasm about specific aardvarks, and promise to not ask Nordic stock market questions for the rest of the year.

In the winners and not-winners circles this week it was nothing but feel-good hits. Long-time team Quizzly Bears came out on top, followed by (presumed) newcomers Quiz-Mats, and exchange-student team One Last Ride went out with a bang in a third-place shootout with The Nordicans. Merry Quizmas experienced the full force of the Most Average prize, splitting a single Tuborg Classic between five people, and It’s My Birthday stayed on-brand with a round of shots in last place.

Here's the week 50 board for everyone else:

1 . Quizzly Bears 65
2 . Quiz-Mats 63

Sold Out Arenas

If you were one of the 33 teams playing at last night’s show, well, you know the rest.

This week we leaned heavily into two of Copenhagen’s favorite things: Christmas music for six months out of the year and wearing fantastically expensive designer sneakers to take the trash out.

You knew all about José Feliciano, copped all of the new Balenciaga drops, and had approximate knowledge of the female reproductive system. Approximate was good enough for this week, though, as our dear friends at Søhesten provided us another generous prize for our most average team. ‘Twas a Christmas miracle.

I’m Not Creative clearly traded their creativity for absolutely killer quiz knowledge and the first place prize. Geralt of Trivia and Eugeniuses had an exciting second-third-place sudden death shootout, with both teams winning beers of different qualities in containers of different volumes. In-sanity stuck around for the whole quiz, sliding gracefully into their last-place round of shots. 6 from 6 got four out of every six questions correct, which was exactly enough to snag the average prize.

The rest of you did great - here’s the board for week 49:

1 . I'm Not Creative 61

Five Golden Rings

Our favorite part of quiz isn’t asking the questions, it’s getting to learn cool stuff about Denmark, Europe, and all of the other places you are from.

We didn’t know that there is an entire Danish set of gifts for the song the 12 Days of Christmas (a duck? with acorns? on its feet?), that the Danish spelling of the disciple James’ name (Jakob) is more accurate than the English spelling when compared to the Greek translation (Ἰάκωβος, for our Greeks, Iacobus for our Latins). We also didn’t know any of the names of the World Cup goalkeepers - but you did!

It was a tough quiz this week, but our nearest and dearest friends behind the bar introduced a Most Average prize to take the edge off for our most average team - Los Hombres, who we are both mathematically indifferent toward and inclined to award a round from the Gløgg Pot to. Klap Lige Hesten had enough of Danish Mystery Liquid and passed on their last place prize - we can’t really blame them (sorry).

At the end, we had an exciting third place shootout between I Hope My Teammates Show Up and Tim and the Kite Corners, with knowledge of Scottish economists splitting the two into beer winners and not-beer winners - a most ironic capitalist outcome. Second place went to C U Next Tuesday, buoyed up by their partridge and pear tree knowledge, and three points ahead in first place we found the American Idiots.

We also learned that 20% of the American Idiots have seen Bernie Sanders washing his clothes in the river outside of the Coat Factory or whatever, so I guess that’s cool.

The rest of you have really nice coats. Like suspiciously nice. Here’s the board for week 48:

1 . American Idiots 66
2 . C U Next Tuesday 63
3 . I Hope My Teammates Show Up (perfect timed round!) 61

Save Comic Sans!

Last night we celebrated the first day of the 2022 European SharePoint, Office 365 and Azure Conference here in Copenhagen at a special event quiz with our friends at ESPC and The Globe.

Your elder millennial Quizmasters know next to nothing about SharePoint, but ten teams showed off their expert knowledge about their favorite Microsoft platforms alongside their expert knowledge about football, science, dead English poets, and the Moon.

Our generous event organizers suggested that we offer a most average prize in addition to our usual first and last place prizes - a fantastic idea that might be stolen for our weekly shows!

Beruset triumphed in first place with their flawless music knowledge, Flying Hirsch ‘triumphed’ in last place with their unconquerable positivity, and Bgud neither impressed or disappointed us in the most average spot.

Happy ESPC22, SharePointers - and thanks for having us!

Here’s the board for the last night’s event:

1 . Beruset 61
2 . ITS 57
3 . Nobel Laureates 55

Nom de Quizze

As a strictly knowledge-based business we don’t give out prizes for good team names, but a good team name certainly can’t hurt. Here’s your Team Name Leaderboard for week 47 - the places are made up and the places don’t matter:

  1. I Thought This Was a Swingers Club - (see you next week, tiger 😘)

  2. Diversity All Day - (first test, i will not call you that)

  3. No One Wanted to Help Me with the Name - (sorry about your group project)

In an evening immediately following a Danish draw in the World Cup, we learned absolutely nothing about Nicolas Cage, discovered that you have thoughts about pornography and Spain, and were absolutely gobsmacked that you knew the name of the Simpson family pets.

We apologize in arrears for disappointing the teams announced in second and third place as we had an exciting three-way tie at the top between Quizzards (3), Quiz Team (2), and What’s the Upside (1) ending in a sudden death shootout that decided the top spots.

We do not apologize for the cultural experience and round of Danish Mystery Liquid shots that last place team Mamma Mia received. Their review? “Gross.”

We love all 26 teams equally, except the ones that won and had funny names who we love more. Here’s the board for this week:

1 . What's the Upside 55 (knew something about Led Zeppelin!)
2 . Quiz Team 55 (knew something about Iran!)
3 . Quizzards 55 (see us next week for your third place prize!)
4 . Pretty Preps 54 (best round 4!)
4 . Shuufuu 54 (best music round!)
5 . We Hope Lars Didn't Murder Someone 51
6 . Obi-Wanna Know it All 49
7 . No One Wanted to Help Me with the Name 48
7 . Tast 4 48 (perfect visual round!)
8 . I Thought This Was a Swingers Club 46
8 . It's Chewsday Innit? 46
9 . Østerbros 45 (usurped the third place prize by just sticking around!)
10 . Diversity All Day 43

Part of our job as Your American Friends Who Are Insufferable Know-It-Alls is sharing the best (read: worst?) of American culture with you - and we really wish that you, our Danish friends, could experience the glory of a proper Fourthmeal. Spain gets it.

This week, we gambled (unwisely?) on a musical Before and After round, didn’t laugh at a bad joke, got real high-brow with classical music, and scrambled to find Czech friends.

We had an exciting shootout in last place this week, with SNL winning (losing?) the last place prize in a tiebreaker question with Popsicles, who narrowly dodged the honor of being dead last. With Latecomers in third and the coatroom-dwelling Østerbros in second, the absolute powerhouse twosome(!) of newcomers Team Zahle took the fancy bottle and the first place honors this week.

The rest of you? Congratulations on finishing a tough quiz this week! Here’s the week 46 board:

Borders Without Borders

Last night, Quizmaster Carrie had her one-woman show debut last night to a record 41 teams - thanks to everyone who played, including the people playing in the coat room, and thank you for not filling out your answer sheets in the bathroom.

We learned that your favorite band ever was The Wanted, that your world geography is still embarrassingly, frustratingly on point, and that everyone could learn a thing or two from old-timey gold prospectors in the Canadian wilderness.

Hologenomics evolved their knowledge of middle-to-bottom Danish alcohol by winning the last place prize, followed by a ton of teams in the middle, then the Andean flavor of The Llamas in Pajamas in third, the anti-swiping rhetoric of Dora and the Explorers in second, and the partial Scandinavian heritage of The ViQueens taking the top spot.

The Immortal Life of Morgan Freeman

Happy Danish election day! We hope your favorite/enemy candidates won/lost, helping to ensure a brighter/apocalyptic future for the country.

On a serious note as someone who isn’t allowed to vote here yet - regardless of how you voted, stor tak for doing your civic duty and trying your best to make Denmark a better place to live.

Patriotism aside, we celebrated the music choices of aging millennials, learned you should never play Scrabble against quizzers, and will just leave this right here for fans of the Rhyme Time round. Very true to form, you knew the names of Harry Potter spiders but that’s the wrong guy, bud.

We were excited to see some new faces in the top spots last night - with the Beerded Ladies and Coco & the Nuts getting their time to shine in second and third place, and the ViQueens returning from their time in the wilderness to seize the Silver Bucket. The bartenders played cultural ambassadors to The Barstards in last place as they served that sticky icky mystery liquid with gusto.

Right Round ft. Ke$ha

Our new friends over at Round invited us out to do a special quiz show for their Friday bar last week and we were more than happy to help.

For every private quiz we do, we ask two questions in advance:

  1. Robots have taken over the world and outlawed work. What do you do in the new robot future?

  2. You are having a nightmare where you are taking a test. In the nightmare, what subject is that test on?

Most people mention ‘gardening’ and ‘hiking’ for Question 1, but a surprising number of Rounders(?) decided to take up arms against the robots to lead the resistance and help people who the robots would otherwise have forgotten. Their nightmare test in Question 2 was nearly uniformly about physics, so we refrained from asking them about centripetal motion. I for one support our robot and physics-free future.

That said, we subjected them to an international spelling bee, recitation of European children’s books, and tested their mechanical drafting skills with a drawn Top Five question. Team Mon and Pumbaa were dominant in first place (and may make an appearance at our weekly show by the lakes!), followed by the very topical Friyay in second place. They accepted their very real and very meaningful prizes (personal pride and free wine) with pride and collegiality.

Here’s the Round board for last week:

1 . Team Mon and Pumbaa 60
2 . Friyay 52
3 . Quiz Impact Ventures 43
4 . 7 Square 39

I’m Thinking Dorsia

We celebrated election season in Denmark by allowing a tiny fraction of the lunatic fringe voting on an Instagram story to curse the rest of you with a round on the television show Friends. The curse was reversed, however, with 29 teams contributing to the highest Round 1 average in the history of the quiz!

This week we united Harry Potter nerds with Grand Theft Auto miscreants and snuck everyone in to Dorsia, but we still have no clue where Weatherfield is.

It was a tight race up at the top this week, but our top three teams knew something about absolutely awful music and were high-functioning alcoholics/word puzzlers. The Østerbros pulled off a thrilling repeat of last week’s first place win, followed closely by 1 Nord and Nice Try. Our real last place slunk team into the shadows while the 75% British team Rashee Sanook took over from Squirrel Love Bites after they stepped down from their brief Last Place Minister-ship.

Here’s the board (of elections?) for week 43:

1 . Østerbros 63
2 . 1 Nord 60
3 . Nice Try 58
4 . Quizteama Aguilera 56

Knock Knock Ding Ding Dong Dong

Efterårsferie - a time to visit Copenhagen’s delightful museums and cultural institutions, spend time with your kids, and catch a flight to a warm place before the Dark Times begin.

…or, as 34 teams experienced last night, it’s a time to crush beers in a dark bar and show off how much you know about the capital of Azerbaijan.

You expertly navigated the current events round, shed a single tear for a winless Champions League club that shall not be named, activated trap cards, faded into Bolivian, and knew 40% of all of the Russian novelists.

It was a close game at halftime with a one-point spread between our top teams - but it was ultimately the Østerbros’ encyclopedic knowledge of what Sisqó wanted to see that put them over the top for the first-place prize.

The Genital Wards and the ViQueens rounded out our second and third place spots, winning various beers in various containers of varying size.

We were absolutely thrilled that the Norsewomen stuck around for the whole quiz, proudly claimed their last place prize, and allowed us to continue our tradition of introducing non-Danes to the magic of Danish Mystery Liquid.

As always, it was the light of our week 42 to write and read questions for you - and we love all of you in descending order:

1 . Østerbros 60
2 . Genital Wards 56
3 . The ViQueens 53
4 . This is Your Captain Speaking 52

Severus Snape, Nobel Laureate

This week we celebrated Denmark’s absolute mastery of chemistry, famous people who are really bad at quiz, and stupid personality tests. Your Quizmaster is an Enneagram 3 (key feature: vanity) and your Quiz Administrator is an 8 (key feature: vengeance), which sounds about right.

Two things you should be proud of this week:

  • Your mountain, river, and Balkan peninsula knowledge continues to delight and amaze.

  • Two teams suggested Shrek as their bonus category.

We had 26 teams play this week, with some high-flying action at the top of the quiz before and after the Music Round, but at the end, Team B could not be caught. Joke’s on them, though, as second place Team A and third place Crazy Locals won more free alcohol by volume. We also continued the cultural exchange by introducing most of last-place usurpers The Quizzly Bears to the magic of Danish Mystery Liquid, a concoction so old and Danish that there could not possibly be a name for it.

Here’s the board for week 41:

1 . Team B 70
2 . Team A 64
3 . Crazy Locals 61
4 . Østerbros 58
5 . Egg Salad! 57
6 . The Quizards of Oz 52

Only 2% of Danes

In the week that our nearest dearest Søhesten introduced us to the Corona Mega, 34 teams demonstrated their knowledge about the bedtime rituals of Danish people both young and (very) old.

Unfortunately for some teams, far less than 69% of Danes engaged in ménages à trois in the year 2019. The jury is still out though regarding why beds were shorter in the 17th century, but our favorite reasons were:

  1. Not to ruin their wigs

  2. People thought they would lose their knowledge

  3. To not encourage sloth

Good reasons - but I for one think that we should encourage sloth.

We had an exciting showdown for second place between the Østerbros and American Idiots, which boiled down to their knowledge of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and another Greek math man, with the Østerbros taking the second place win.

First time(!) team Small Feet, Big Problems was above the fray in first place this week with their frightening knowledge of cartoon characters, where the Faroe Islands are, and where John Dillermand isn’t wearing a sock.

Here’s the week 40 board:

1 . Small Feet, Big Problems 58
2 . Østerbros 57
3 . American Idiots 57

Danish Mystery Liquid

Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated the one-year anniversary of QC at Søhesten! We always say that writing and sharing the quiz with you is the light of our week - and we mean it. Over 2,000 questions, 40 bottles of first-place prosecco, and now three shots of Danish Mystery Liquid later, we’re still excited to see you every Tuesday.

Last night 34 teams tested the limits of a 20-serving kagemand, listened to the last playlist you hear before getting dragged down to Hell, forgot what a lepidopterist was, and watched a quizmaster lose a bet to two teams who knew the names of all the fictional Von Trapp kids.

We also celebrated the long-awaited introduction of an upgraded Second Place Prize, the introduction of a Third Place Prize, and the upgrade (downgrade?) of the Last Place Prize - and we’re happy to announce that those will be returning every week for the next year of quiz. We’re also working on another Secret Project in the background for regular teams, so stay tuned!

There Is No Planet B

We were super excited to work with Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke for our first climate justice themed quiz as part of this year’s Climate Justice Days program here in Copenhagen - and with a record 38 teams playing, so were you!

Through the evening you showed off your knowledge about sustainable rice farming, Japanese business casual wear, underwater environmental style icons, and exceptionally difficult Guitar Hero songs. The jury is still out on Soylent Green, though, and we’re not going to share the recipe.

Our generous co-hosts Lea and Josephine shared their climate justice knowledge with us and provided an absolute cornucopia of fantastic prizes that went to our best, not-best, and exactly precisely average teams. You’re all winners to us, though.

Cheese Rolling Is Not a Gaelic Game

…but we honestly can’t fault the logic in that guess.

We had 30 teams this week, including many that were able to spot the tiny beekeeper in our Visual Round and many more that knew that the scrub hanging out the passenger side of his best friend’s ride was trying to holler at me.

That said - we have a confession to make. We forgot to pack the laptop containing the hard-earned scores of those 30 teams and now it is very much Not In France, where we took off to early this morning. We’ll have real scores up for the week 36 quiz as soon as we are reunited with our technology.

edit: France couldn’t stop us, here’s the board:

We had 27 teams at Søhesten this week - and nearly every one of them knew all of the countries that end in the letter L!

What the Helminth?

We went from knowing zero parasite scientists to knowing seventy parasite scientists at the ICOPA 2022 conference in Copenhagen - specifically at Sydney, Australia’s 2026 bid party. We had a great time at SUKAIBA in Bella Sky and we were only 40% intimidated asking questions to people who make a living being impossibly, unreasonably smart.

Teams performed admirably identifying facts and figures from a selection of scientific papers - including one on camel urine - and the contingent of Australian quizzers knew plenty about the back catalogs of INXS and Keith Urban.

In the end, though - three teams out of twenty were victorious and one team was just a really great sport:

1 . NTDs (in a tie!)
2 . From Lima to Sydney in every disco I get in my heart is pumping for love
3 . Cleopatras
Last Place . So Lost
